It’s been a couple of months since he/she broke your heart.
You’ve spent time sulking, crying, being angry and talking it out with close friends. You may have drunk your fair share of wine and/or gotten to know your local bartender better than you used to.
You’ve thrown away pictures and returned items of clothing and possessions to your ex. Perhaps you changed your social media status to “single” and removed any online traces of your relationship with that former fateful someone.
Your friends all tell you to get back on the proverbial horse. They recommend that you create or refresh your online dating profile and join some new meet-up.com groups. With infinite but potentially depressing helpfulness, your friends and family start running through their mental Rolodex of dating potentials.
And now you’re ready for the next one, right?
Well, no. Not necessarily.
Even with enough time and effort spent on getting through the painful emotions of a breakup or separation, you still may not be ready for another relationship quite yet.
You see, the emotional heart is a funny thing. It’s not like you have a problem with the anatomical function of the right ventricle in your heart. With a specific surgery, your heart would be repaired and functioning back to near-normal relatively soon.
With the emotional heart, there are several things you can do to aid the recovery process. Regrettably, there is no perfect formula for getting over an ex. As a Denver relationship therapist, I wish I could tell you differently.
